GIVING BACK
Being born and raised in the Merrimack Valley, John and Russell understand the importance of being an active part of and giving back to their community.
With roots here and success in the industry, John and Russell were approached in 2017 when Andover-based Greater Lawrence Technical School began considering creating a horticulture and landscaping program.
Since that time, John and Russell have been a part of the advisory committee guiding the program to develop a strong curriculum, setting up a great shop space, purchasing materials / equipment, and recommending program improvements to the school committee.
"We are really proud to be helping the next generation of greens-industry professionals hone their craft. It makes it even more special to be supporting students from Lawrence, Methuen, Andover, and North Andover. Greater Lawrence Technical School does a really good job of preparing students for the work force and/or higher education. There’s a misconception that those in the landscape field are not part of a skilled trade; this couldn’t be further from the truth. We hope to change this misconception and help develop a labor force in our growing industry right here in the Merrimack Valley," says Russell.
Together, Russell and John have used their networks to solicit donations of materials for masonry and horticultural supplies for the students to use and learn with hands-on. They both currently sit on the advisory committee where Russell has served as the chairperson for 3 years.
There are currently 45 students enrolled in this program, 20 alone are in their freshman year, and this year's junior class will be first class to work in internships and get out into the field.
For more information on this program, visit Greater Lawrence Technical School's program page.
