PROJECT SPOTLIGHT | MAIN STREET, ANDOVER

Situated mid-way between the historic Phillips Academy campus and the bustling downtown area, this property came to life with a design that’s both functional and beautiful. When we initially sat down with the homeowners to discuss their lifestyle, they had just gotten a very exuberant puppy that needed a place to run and play. A traditional fence would isolate the yard and really restrict it’s flow, so we created a ‘puppy lawn’ surrounded by a stainless steel cable system that allows for a safe-dog environment while simultaneously keeping the sight lines open to the remainder of the property.

A circular fieldstone fire pit with a hand-tooled, two-piece cap sits perfectly within the bluestone patio. Located adjacent to the screened porch in the most private part of the yard, the location is optimal for this ultimate four-season retreat... continue reading

It's now summer's last month and we've begun to feel the seasons transitioning. We're welcoming in the cool mornings, warm days, and crisp nights and look forward to more time outdoors - especially nights outside cozying up to the fire surrounded by family and friends - before the seasons change again.

HAVE A LANDSCAPE NEED, BUT DON’T NEED A MASTER PLAN?

IMG_4738.JPG

Have a small landscape improvement need, but don't need a master-plan project?

It's officially SUMMER in New England!

Let us help you get your outdoor spaces looking revived and ready for spending more time outdoors soaking up the sun, reading in the shade, or spending time by the fire pit on a crisp night.

Andover Landscape Design & Construction also offers landscape design and construction services that don't necessarily require a complete landscape design with a master plan. If you are finding that your property could use a pick-me-up, we can help spruce up your space. Check out the photos below to see how we revived these beautiful spaces.

LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENT SERIES: MAXIMIZE SMALLER SPACES

LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENT SERIES: MAXIMIZING SMALLER SPACES

June is the month where spring transitions to summer; we've all been looking forward to this warmer weather, summer nights, and more time outdoors. Continuing on with our landscape improvement series, we are showcasing maximizing smaller spaces. Even smaller areas can be maximized to offer incredible functionality when designed properly. Keep reading to see how we maximized these spaces for optimal enjoyment.

ANDOVER’S DOWNTOWN AREA

These properties may have smaller lots and less frontage than other homes in town, however this quintessential downtown Andover home allowed us to create an inviting entry that flows beautifully from the street. From the sidewalk, bluestone was used to create a landing leading to three steps followed by a walkway. Two tall, matching planters used for seasonal plantings and spreading liriope surround the sides of the steps leading to plush lawn. The lawn is met with beautiful, tailored gardens that include boxwood, holly, and blooming hydrangea lining an incredibly restored wrap-around porch. All visitors experience all of this in the time it takes to walk a short distance from the street to the vibrant yellow door; talk about warm welcome!

SOUTHEND ROOFTOP

As challenging as small spaces can be, we find that they always turn out incredible when no detail is spared. We transformed this open-space rooftop to a contemporary oasis in Boston's South End. Using dark composite decking, weathered lead planters, contemporary patio furniture, and lush greenery to offer privacy, this once blank canvas is now an inviting space for relaxing and taking in the city skyline.

COUNTRY CLUB LANE

We transformed this backyard into a true sanctuary fully equipped with an in-ground pool, hot tub, and fire pit. However, the size and shape of the area this property presented was not your typical size to welcome these client requests. The large home combined with rear yard setback as well as conservation setbacks created a small envelope for development. Still, we delivered and designed this space that will provide years of outdoor enjoyment.

5 UNDER 40 2018: RUSSELL D.H. STOTT - NEW ENGLAND HOME MAGAZINE

Andover Landscape Design & Construction's firm partner and in-house architect, Russell D. H. Stott, was featured in an article by Erin Marvin at New England Home Magazine.

"There are only so many hours in the day, but don’t tell that to landscape designer Russell Stott. As both principal of Andover Landscape Design and Construction and senior manager of Campus Design, Sustainability, and Grounds at Phillips Academy, Stott often says that, 'Phillips Academy is my nine-to-five, and Andover Landscape is my five-to-nine.' A strong love of design, the design process, and fostering relationships with his clients—not to mention a very supportive wife—fuels his daily passion.

When he’s not overseeing the 700-acre campus noted for its Frederick Law Olmsted and Charles Platt design, Stott works on a number of custom residential projects across New England. Recent Massachusetts projects include a contemporary rooftop garden in Boston, a backyard pool design in North Reading, master plans for a Federal-style home in Chestnut Hill, and a summer estate in Orleans."

"Stott approaches each landscape as a sculptural installation. 'I feel that my designs emerge naturally from their surroundings and have a strong connection to both the home’s architecture and the native environs,' he says. 'I am constantly trying to find ways to blur the lines between interior and exterior.'

Colors and materials take their cues from the home’s architecture, and classic New England materials like granite and bluestone are arranged in clean, contemporary patterns. Along with design elements such as simplicity and asymmetrical balance, his work is also shaped by a solid understanding of how plants mature and what maintenance they require to preserve their design intent.

Somehow, Stott also finds time to give back to his community. He currently serves as chairman of the Greater Lawrence Technical School Horticulture Advisory Program, which he hopes will help foster the next great landscape designer."
