LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENT SERIES: TRANSITIONAL DESIGN

We're continuing into April with our Landscape Improvement Series. We'll be sharing various projects from our portfolio with you of different styles and aesthetics.

You can probably infer that transitional design is when you marry two opposite styles. We like to think of it like a fresh take on a classic design with some updates that are more contemporary. Transitional design honors the history of a house, but adds in a fresh twist bringing a home's aesthetic up-to-date with clean lines and simplistic design.

Below are some photographs of a custom, gunite swimming pool and surrounding landscape that would be considered transitional style. The site presented a number of challenges including conservation setback requirements and zoning setbacks -- which were overcome by creative design and shoehorning a beautiful pool into a tight site.

Granite pavers surround the pool and create a flat landing for a moveable fire bowl. South-facing chaise lounges sit on a granite terrace with lawn joints. Full-length pool steps create a very inviting entrance from the chaise terrace. The existing deck stairs were re-routed in order to create adequate walking room around the pool while the new stairs create a nice flow from the upper deck to the lower pool garden.

A privacy-board fence runs along the side boundaries while a lower cedar fence with wire mesh runs adjacent to the rear yard's wood lands. This mesh fence creates a feeling of transparency and openness all while meeting pool enclosure code requirements.

A blend of traditional details and materials are combined with a clean, contemporary layout to create a private backyard paradise.
