newfound view
NEWFOUND VIEW | BRISTOL, NEW HAMPSHIRE
Situated on the shore of Newfound Lake in central New Hampshire, this outdoor retreat looks west over the spring-fed waters toward the mountains beyond. Russell’s design intent was to provide the homeowners with a viewing perspective that captured the feel of lakefront living. After careful consideration, the decision was made to petition the conservation commission to amend the height of the shoreline. Upon their approval, we were able to accomplish the goal of this calculated elevation which makes the upper plateau appear to jut out into the lake. The fire pit terrace, situated on a plane aligned with the home’s finished basement floor and on top of the aforementioned plateau, uses inlaid bluestone with lawn joints to create a refined campfire retreat, while following conservation requirements of permeable paving.
The home’s main living space extends outdoors to a wooden deck which overlooks the lake. The deck connects to the walkout basement terrace via a bluestone slab staircase. A quick walk down a a grass path with granite lawn treads brings us to a private beach for lounging and water access. Transitioning from refined to rustic successfully makes the landscape feel cohesive and inviting. As the sole landscape designer at Andover Landscape Design & Construction, Russell was on-site daily working with the crew to make sure all the details were spot-on. Russell’s physical presence on the job allowed his original design intent to be carried through from pencil to stone making a seamless transition from thought to form.
